There are some traditions that you can’t sway the family to forgo – like a big, juicy Thanksgiving turkey. Though recent studies have found that the livestock industry produces more global greenhouse gas emissions than transportation, trying to coerce the family to a no-meat dinner may be in vain. For those who just have to have it, there are eco-friendly alternatives besides a “Tofurkey”. Natural, organic and free-range turkeys are your best alternatives to the average frozen bird. Fortunately, there are farmer’s markets that not only sell these kind of turkeys during the holidays, but pasture-raised beef, pork, poultry, eggs and dairy products all year round.
Buying an organic turkey, however, can be pretty expensive when you’re expecting a large crowd, so if necessary, compromise by buying a conventional turkey and make the rest of your meal using local and/or organic foods.
